When I was about to graduate high school and go off to college to live on my own, my
father created this web site so that I might cook for me all by myself. He wanted a way
for foreign-born daughters like me to learn to prepare homemade Bengali dishes by
watching the way most of our mothers cook. But, being a busy student, finding time to
cook was difficult and the web site languished. After finishing up my undergraduate at
UC Berkeley (USA), I thought of taking up cooking again using my mothers recipes. Ma
grew up in Kolkata and before getting married, collected hundreds of recipes that now
float all over the house on loose sheets of paper. Ma started cooking when she married
my father after graduating from Presidency College (Kolkata) and migrating to the USA
to join him. My father and I were inspired to share our recipes with you because we
have had the good fortune of eating my mother's healthy, hearty homemade Bengali
meals for most of our lives. My dad is the planner, the writer, the videographer, the
editor and the web page maker. He also likes to write when he finds time after his
college teaching.
